How to become a minimalist?
Anyone can become a minimalist, all you need is a desire to have more with less. Follow these simple steps to start your journey right now. Living a minimalist life has great benefits. It gives me more time, space and freedom and also has a good effect on my finances. Living with less allows me to shape my life towards my goals, happiness, and fulfillment.
What is minimalism?
Lets first establish what minimalism is. It’s not about living in an empty apartment with no belongings around you. It’s rather making conscious decisions about what adds value to your life and what makes you happy. And then try your best to eliminate the extra’s, the burden, the clutter, the stress and the things keeping you from enjoying your life.
For many, the journey towards minimalism starts with decluttering your home, your mind and downsizing your consumption habits. Also, practicing being more mindful about what you bring to your home and into your life.
It’s also important to remember that Minimalism doesn’t come with a rule book everyone has to follow. Instead, each and everyone has to find their own path in minimalism. This is your journey and only you can know why and how you want to live your life.
Establish your why
The most important step when entering the journey towards minimalism is knowing why you want to be a minimalist. You may also want to set some goals for the coming journey. Making a big lifestyle change can be challenging, especially in the beginning. So writing down your why and your goals might help you establish a clear view of what you want to accomplish by living with less. Whether it’s about creating more space, having more time to do the things you love, saving more money or living an organized and uncluttered life. If you have this clear for yourself, even written down it will help you establish why you want to do this and also how you want to do it.
First steps in decluttering
This may feel daunting at first. Thinking about all the drawers filled with stuff, all the closets and don’t even get me started on storage space. But I’m not here to scare you off, remember we are only doing this in small steps.
There are a lot of methods out there for decluttering. For example, the Chaos method, the KonMari method, The Minimalist game, the Closet hanger method, Swedish death cleaning and so many others. You don’t need to decide what method you want to use right away. But it could be a good idea to set aside some time to learn about these methods and decide if any of them appeal to you.
Many people use a combination of methods and some even invent their own method of decluttering in the process. I, for example, found out that I like to use a mix of KonMari and the Chaos. But I’ve made my own little tweaks to those both when I declutter. But I will tell you more about my method later.
Start somewhere fun and easy
It’s always easier to complete tasks that are fun. It makes time pass quicker and it also keeps you motivated to keep on going. To get you motivated on your journey, it’s a good idea to start decluttering something that is easy and fun in your home. That way you will get excited and inspired about what you’re doing. For example, if your favorite thing is knitting and you have a lot of yarn around your home, start with decluttering and organizing your yarn and knitting accessories. When you see how well you did and how fun and easy it was to declutter and organize your knitting stuff it will keep you motivated to continue on your journey.
Change your buying habits
Now that you’ve started your minimalism journey it’s important to implement those lifestyle habits as soon as possible. It’s no use decluttering if you keep on bringing home new items to declutter. So think about what you buy, why and what you want to do with those items. Are they something you intend on keeping or are they just a short fix that you will probably end up decluttering soon anyway.
Some people even go as far as to implement a shopping ban on themselves while they de-clutter their home. That is to prevent exactly what I described, bringing home even more stuff to declutter while you are learning the robes of decluttering and organizing. Of course, this is something only you can decide on, but it doesn’t hurt to at least think about what we want to accomplish with our minimalism journey. So as you start letting go of things that you are taking from your home it’s a good idea to also take a look at what you are bringing in.
